Database Research Cluster (Core Facility of the Research Infrastructure in Austria)
Database Research Cluster
The Database Research Cluster (DBRC) is an official core facility of the research infrastructure in Austria.
At a Glance
Infrastructure
Overall, the core facility Database Research Cluster consists of 35 physical server systems:
Hardware Infrastructure
Virtual Machine Hosts
We run 8 identical physical servers that serve as hosts for virtual machine (VM), and we call such a server a VM host. The VM hosts are managed via Proxmox VE, have access to a shared Ceph-Storage with 3x redundancy, and are connected via 2x200Gbit/s Infiniband network interconnects. Virtual machines can be requested and are hosted on one of these 8 VM hosts. Note that any virtual machine is naturally limited by the specification of a single VM host.
Specification:
| Component | Specification |
|---|---|
| Server | Supermicro 2HE Server |
| Processor(s) | 2x AMD Epyc CPUs with 16 physical cores (32 threads with hyper-threading) |
| Main Memory (RAM) | 2TB |
| Storage | 4x4TB + 4x12TB HDD |
| Network | 4x10Gbit/s Ethernet + 2x200Gbit/s Infiniband |
| Operating System (OS) | Debian 6.1.140-1 x86_64 GNU/Linux |
Cluster A
Cluster A consists of 10 identical physical machines for which direct access can be requested, e.g., to conduct experiments on native hardware.
Specification:
| Component | Specification |
|---|---|
| Server | Supermicro 2HE Server (?) |
| Processor(s) | 1x AMD Epyc 9345P 3.75GHz CPUs with 32 physical cores (64 threads with hyper-threading; single socket, i.e., 1 NUMA node) |
| Main Memory (RAM) | 12x32GB = 384GB DDR5-4800 (37.5GB/s per channel; 12 channels) |
| Storage | 2x1.75TB = 3.5TB NVMe SSD (PCIe 4.0 x4; 2GB/s per lane; 4 lanes) |
| Network | 2x200Gbit/s NDR Infiniband via a NVIDIA ConnectX-7 NIC |
| Operating System (OS) | Debian 6.1.140-1 x86_64 GNU/Linux |
Cluster B
Cluster B consists of 10 physical machines, where 5 physical machines are identical, respectively. We refer to the specification below for more details: Five machines follow Specification 1 and the five other machines follow Specification 2. Also for Cluster B, direct access can be requested, e.g., to conduct experiments on native hardware.
Specification 1 (Five Machines):
| Component | Specification |
|---|---|
| Server | Supermicro 2HE Server (?) |
| Processor(s) | 2x Intel Xeon E5-2630 v3 2.40GHz CPUs with 16 physical cores (32 threads with hyper-threading; dual socket, i.e., 2 NUMA nodes) |
| Main Memory (RAM) | 8x12GB = 96GB DDR?-???? (??.??GB/s per channel; ?? channels) |
| Storage | 2x2TB = 4TB HDD (PCIe ?.0 x?; ?GB/s per lane; ? lanes) |
| Network | 1x56Gbit/s FDR Infiniband via a Mellanox ConnectX-3 NIC ? |
| Operating System (OS) | Debian 6.1.140-1 x86_64 GNU/Linux |
Specification 2 (Five Machines):
| Component | Specification |
|---|---|
| Server | Supermicro 2HE Server (?) |
| Processor(s) | 2x Intel Xeon E5-2603 v4 1.70GHz CPUs with 12 physical cores (24 threads with hyper-threading; dual socket, i.e., 2 NUMA nodes) |
| Main Memory (RAM) | 8x12GB = 96GB DDR?-???? (??.??GB/s per channel; ?? channels) |
| Storage | 2x2TB = 4TB HDD (PCIe ?.0 x?; ?GB/s per lane; ? lanes) |
| Network | 1x56Gbit/s FDR Infiniband via a Mellanox ConnectX-3 NIC ? |
| Operating System (OS) | Debian 6.1.140-1 x86_64 GNU/Linux |
Backup Servers
We run two identical physical machines to backup data, one on-site and one off-site backup server managed via Proxmox.
Specification:
| Component | Specification |
|---|---|
| Server | Supermicro 2HE Server (?) |
| Processor(s) | 2x AMD Epyc CPUs with 16 physical cores (32 threads with hyper-threading) |
